Daniel Day, known as Dapper Dan, is a Harlem couturier known as the “king of knock-offs.” He made his name in the late ’80s and ’90s as the tailor who provided signature custom luxury products to a slew of emerging hip-hop artists and athletes including the likes of LL Cool J, Mike Tyson, Rakim, and many more until he was shut down for copyright infringement in his prime. He returned to prominence in 2018 after a cultural appropriation scandal led Gucci to finance the rebirth of his business and include him in its diversity council. He now has his own custom Gucci boutique in Harlem.
In a full-circle moment, Gucci sent them a cease and desist letter in 2018 for this design. They then took their logo off and added their own logo, and put the letter on the back!!!!!!!
